The DfT is to retain civil servants outside London after the demise of the Government’s regional offices. Communities and Local Government Secretary, Eric Pickles, announced last autumn that the Government’s eight regional offices outside the capital were to be closed as part of the Government’s cost-cutting agenda. The regional offices include transport teams who, among other tasks, liaise with Local Authorities in the regions.

The DfT has stated it needs to ensure a transport presence outside London to continue work with Local Government and other sub-national strategic interests. The new arrangements will be put in place before the closure of the Government offices in March 2011.
