A £20 million refurbishment of the main runway at Manchester Airport is to take place next year. The runway will be closed at night for a period of 8 months. The programme of work to overhaul Runway 1 will run from January to September 2011 and is the biggest runway refurbishment since the airport opened in 1938.
The original runway, which is currently in use 24 hours a day, was last resurfaced 14 years ago and now needs a full refurbishment to accommodate more modern and larger aircraft. The project will include resurfacing, rewiring and better lighting.
The number of flights will not be cut during the work, with night-time take-offs and landings switched to Runway 2. Aircraft are not normally allowed to land on the second runway between 22:30 and 06:00 but the airport has permission to use it for emergencies or maintenance.
