The Coalition Government has committed to reviewing its public bodies, with the aim of increasing accountability for actions carried out on behalf of the state.
Prior to the review, the Department for Transport (DfT) withheld 15 public bodies, however, 6 of these bodies will now be abolished. This includes the Commission for Integrated Transport, Cycling England, Railway Heritage Committee, Disabled Persons’ Transport Advisory Committee and the Renewable Fuels Agency.
The public bodies to be retained will be required to become more open, accountable and efficient and all Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs) that are being retained will be subject to a new framework and review process.
