High-speed rail (HSR) has the potential to provide economic benefits to the UK far wider than simply between London and the Midlands. By utilising connections with the existing transport network, integrating with other transport modes and freeing up capacity, the benefits for the regions can be maximised.

The Government has stated a desire to re-balance the national economy, and is regarding development of a new high-speed line – HS2 – as an important first step in this process.

With the consultation on HS2 now underway, and the Government having decided there will be no aviation capacity expansion in the South-East, the time is right to discuss the opportunities this and subsequent projects can provide and to look at maximising benefits for the entire country.

By linking regional airports to HSR, pressure can be taken off the South-East whilst creating new jobs and economic activity in the regions. Regional airports are strategic national assets, with spare capacity in excess of the combined maximum of Heathrow and Gatwick.
