Passengers flying from Durham Tees Valley Airport are being charged a new fee to use the airport. Adult passengers must now pay a £6 airport facility fee, whilst children pay £2.
Passengers pay the new fee at machines in the terminal enabling them to pass through security and into departure areas. Similar schemes are already in operation at other UK airports including Blackpool, Newquay and Norwich, although at Blackpool passengers currently receive free airport parking in return for the fee.
Chief Executive, Craig Richmond, said the airport was operating at a loss, adding: that it is a tough time and when passenger numbers have fallen by between 30 and 40%, something needs to be done to stabilise the finances and that this fee is to safeguard the airport’s future.
