Aer Arann is to start operating from Southend Airport, following an investment in the airline from the airport’s owners, the Stobart Transport Group. Flights to Galway and Waterford will commence on 28 March 2010, with more destinations, including flights aimed at business travellers, to be scheduled in 2011.
Southend Airport currently has only one scheduled route, a summer service to Jersey operated by Flybe. The short runway means there are restrictions on the types of aircraft that can be used, but Aer Arann’s 40-70 seat turboprop aircraft are able to operate at the airport.
Stobart has invested heavily in the airport, at which a dedicated rail station will begin operations in December 2010 within walking distance of the terminal that will link it with the City of London in 50 minutes. The airport hopes to benefit from the 2012 Olympics and to emulate some of the success of London City Airport.
