A rise in long-haul passengers has helped Manchester Airport return to growth in passenger numbers for the first time in over two years. Strong demand for routes to the Middle East, Singapore and the United States meant the airport had a total of 1.632 million passengers in October 2010, up by 29,000 or 1.81% on October 2009, the first monthly increase since May 2008.
Scheduled international services saw the biggest increase, with 945,316 passengers against 861,396 in October 2009, up by 9.74%. The number of scheduled international flights rose by 3.1% to 7,519. The number of charter passengers slipped 7.8% to 475,000 and domestic routes carried 211,857 travellers, down 6.54%.
Emirates broke its record for the most passengers on a flight out of Manchester when it carried 517 people on its service to Dubai. Passenger numbers were also boosted at the airport by Singapore Airlines’ move from five flights a week to seven in September 2010, and Etihad Airways’ increased capacity on services to Abu Dhabi.
